Obesity is a serious and growing problem among our pets. Recent studies have found that up to 40% of our adult pets are overweight or obese. Obesity is linked to dozens of serious and even life-threatening illnesses and medical conditions.

Medical problems associated with obesity in pets include:

  • Heart Disease
  • Heart Failure
  • Hypertension
  • Kidney Disease
  • Cancer
  • Pain
  • Diminished Quality of Life
  • Premature Death

Lean pets live an average of two years longer than overweight pets and are also less prone to many serious diseases including arthritis, diabetes and heart disease. Studies show that overweight pets develop arthritis years earlier (on average) than lean pets. But, the good news is that getting your pet get back into shape may help you enjoy many active years together!

To help our patients achieve and maintain a healthy weight, we have developed a weight management plan that can help any pet lose weight. Here’s how it works:

At the time of your pets regular visit, we will weigh your pet and the doctor will Body Condition Score (BCS) your pet on a scale of 1 to 9. Those patients with a BCS of 7 or higher will receive a complimentary Weight Management Pack.  The Weight Management Pack contains information you can use to help get your pet on the road to wellness including:

  • A Weight Management Program Form
  • Exercise Tips
  • Calorie Counting Handouts
  • Body Condition Scoring Information
  • Our Natural Diet Handout

Your veterinarian can recommend specific changes in diet and exercise and the entire staff of LePar Animal Hospital is ready to assist you achieve your pet’s weight loss goal. We’ll follow-up with 30, 60 & 90 day calls to have you bring your pet in to be weighed at no charge. Our staff is prepared to answer any questions you may have. You don’t have to wait to get started.
